Measuring and control system for the quantity of spray lubricant

Measuring and control system for the quantity of spray lubricant

Exact measurement of the spray lubricant quantity increases the die lifetime!

Within the scope of a ZIM project, we developed a measurement and control system based on innovative ultrasonic sensors, which allows the specification of a precise quantity of spray lubricant for use in hot or warm forging.

In this way, the quality, reproducibility and economic efficiency of the forging process are significantly improved.

The heart of the system is the innovative measuring system which can be applied to the relevant flow rate range and different lubricant compositions and covers the application areas of typical forging processes over a wide area. The quality of the spray process in the forging industry has a major influence on the die life and the quality of the forged components as well as on the scrap rates of the components. Until now, it has not been possible, to measure the exact amount of lubricant per spray point applied to the dies between the forging processes or even to set it reproducibly, given the extremely short spray times.

Therefore, we developed a special measuring tube that requires little space and can be integrated into the spray system. In addition to the measuring principle, a control system with activation of the valves was also worked out. The measuring system with electronics and control software was integrated into a test facility and subjected to extensive series of measurements. The proven measuring accuracy of 1.5 - 3 % is very high, thus considerably improving the quality of the spraying process.

A further advantage of the system is that a retrofit of existing plants is also possible.

Many thanks to the employees of PFIF, who actively supported us throughout the entire project. We look forward to further exciting projects with you!
